Power to the People: The PUC and Fossil Fuel Expansion in NH

Come listen to the always engaging NH Consumer Advocate, D. Maurice Kreis, the spark ⚡️of the PUC! If you thought talking about utilities was a dry topic, come listen in and change your mind! If you're actively supporting the transition to renewable energy or engaged in pipeline opposition, this is a don't miss event!

Thursday, August 2nd, 6:00 pm
49 Community Way, Keene NH
* Across from Monadnock Food Co-Op: Please park with care as many areas are for residents or co-op customers.

D. Maurice Kreis, New Hampshire’s Consumer Advocate at the Public Utility Commission (PUC) visits Keene on Thursday, Aug 2nd. The Clean Energy Team is hosting a talk by Attorney Kreis on his role advocating for residential ratepayers in public utility proceedings and policy decisions. OCA Kreis will address the impact of public engagement and share his perspective on what issues matter to the PUC. The presentation starts at 6 PM at 49 Community Way, across from the Co-Op.

A panel discussion with educator and ECHO Action activist, Stephanie Scherr, Keene City Councilor, Terry Clark, and Attorney Richard Husband immediately follows the presentation. All three panelists are involved in dockets currently before the PUC and will share their experiences in “picking their battles,” and the opportunities for engagement by interested citizens.

The Clean Energy Team of Monadnock Progressive Alliance hosts educational events to help our neighbors and local businesses learn about the economic, environmental and health benefits of energy efficiency, weatherization, and renewable energy.

The event is free and open to the public.

Epping Board of Selectmen

GRANITE BRIDGE PIPELINE PRESENTATION

PIPELINE PRESENTATION AT EPPING BOARD OF SELECTMEN
Monday, March 12th 7:00 PM

• Why do so many communities across America oppose pipelines?
• The pipeline company says they'll pay our town or give us gifts. Aren't we getting a good deal?
• Will our electricity rates go down?
• Who pays for the pipeline?
• What are the risks?
• What will I see? hear? smell? breathe?
• What are our alternatives?
• What is an intervenor? Should our Board of Selectmen apply to become intervenors?

Come learn what Liberty Utilities' Granite Bridge Pipeline could mean for Epping and other towns along the pipeline route, what can be expected long-term, alternatives, organizing the community, what to ask and how to respond to the pipeline company and more. Experienced organizers who were threatened by the Kinder Morgan Northeast Energy Direct (NED) pipeline will share what they learned, what you need to know and why they've been actively engaged in energy issues in New Hampshire and nationwide since 2014. Bring your questions. All are welcome.

BACKGROUND

Liberty Utilities has proposed an 11-mile fracked gas pipeline in NH that would run along RT 12-A in West Lebanon to west of the Lebanon Green and north to downtown Hanover.

Community opposition is mounting!

In the past, “natural” (fracked) gas was widely viewed as a “bridge fuel” (bridge to renewable energy sources) because it burns cleaner than oil and coal and renewables were still developing. Energy efficiency measures and viable, widely available, renewable energy means we can stop expanding the use of fracked gas.

Hydraulic fractured (fracked) gas is methane, a very potent greenhouse gas that is released into the atmosphere not only as a combustible, but fugitive methane is released during drilling, extraction, transportation and through pervasive leaks in pipeline systems that are not considered a threat and therefore, not repaired.

Fracked gas expansion is a threat to our health, safety, aquifers, wildlife and climate. We have viable, economic options that are not being considered.

SENATE PARADE: FERC REFORM LOBBYING with Stop The Pipelines Coalition

While ECHO Action is in Washington, DC at the U.S. Capitol with other organizations on July 20th to tell Congress and the Senate, NO FERC QUORUM, we need YOU to do the same from home!

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has only commissioner and it's holding up pipeline permits. For pipeline opponents, this is a grand opportunity. We want to encourage legislators to avoid approving new FERC commissioners.

Fossil Fuel CEOs have said that if FERC is not functional by the August Congressional break, they will have to halt pipelines. Nexxus, Atlantic Coast and PennEast may all be on the chopping block. Well, you know how we'd feel about that - dominoes, begin to tumble!

"We will join many other organizations in delivering our letter to Congress outlining the reforms that are needed to make significant differences to FERC. The lack of a quorum for FERC (there is only one commissioner out of five) is a very real threat to the fossil fuel pushers. Anything you can do to help? You betcha.

On July 20th we will personally deliver our letter to Congress and parade through the Senate buildings with our signs throughout the day in a visible show of solidarity from East Coast and Midwestern communities abused and threatened by FERC. We have appointments to meet with many members of Congress and New Hampshire's Annie Kuster is one of them.

Fossil Fuel CEOs have said that if FERC is not functional by the August Congressional break, they will have to halt pipelines. Nexxus, Atlantic Coast and PennEast may all be on the chopping block. Well, you know how we'd feel about that - dominoes, begin to tumble!

We're part of a national coalition delivering our letter to members of Congress and the Senate, outlining the reforms that are needed to make significant differences to FERC. The lack of a quorum for FERC (there is only one commissioner out of five) is a very real threat to the fossil fuel pushers and the pipelines they want permitted.

On Thursday, we'll personally deliver our letter to Congress and parade through the Senate buildings with our signs throughout the day in a visible show of solidarity from East Coast and Midwestern communities abused and threatened by FERC. New Hampshire's Congresswomen Annie Kuster and Carol Shea Porter are on our schedule of visits.

FERC Approved Pipelines Release climate changing emissions and induce more drilling, fracking and fossil fuel use which, according to experts, could tip us over the climate changing cliff. Right Now, FERC Can't Approve Any Pipelines or LNG Export Facilities Because they Don’t have the Legal Quorum Necessary to Cast Binding Votes. Help us keep it that way."
